SSS Sodium P-styrene Sulfonate CAS 2695-37-6

Sodium p-styrene sulfonate is a polymer monomer with a unique effect, used in reactive emulsifiers and dyeing auxiliaries. Vinyl activity: >=89%

About Sodium p-styrene sulfonate:

Physical properties: Sodium p-styrene sulfonate is usually a white or yellowish powder or crystal with a slight odour. It has a high melting point, around 280°C, and a low solubility in water but is completely soluble in alkaline aqueous solutions.

Chemical properties: Sodium p-styrene sulfonate is an anionic surfactant with the general properties of anionic surfactants. Under acidic conditions, it is easy to undergo a hydrolysis reaction to produce p-styrene sulfonic acid and corresponding alcohols. Under alkaline conditions, it can form complexes with metal ions.

Solubilization and colloidal ability: Naphtyrene sulfonate has good solubilization and colloidal ability, which can bring other insoluble substances into the solution, thereby increasing its solubility.

Dispersion and stability: Sodium p-styrene sulfonate can be used as a dispersant and stabilizer, dispersing solid particles in the liquid and maintaining its stability.

Hard water resistance: Sodium p-styrene sulfonate has strong hard water resistance to calcium and magnesium ions in hard water and can be used in hard water without forming precipitation.

Biocompatibility: Sodium p-styrene sulfonate is considered safe at normal concentrations and has some biocompatibility. However, as with other surfactants, prolonged heavy use may cause skin or mucous membrane irritation.

Applications of Sodium p-styrene sulfonate:

Textile industry: In the textile industry, sodium p-styrene sulfonate is mainly used as a dye dispersant and levelling agent. It can improve the dispersion of the dye, improve the dyeing effect and uniformity, and make the fabric bright colour and high colour fastness. In addition, sodium p-styrene sulfonate can also be used for soft and antistatic treatment of textiles to improve the comfort and antistatic properties of fabrics.

Printing and dyeing industry: Sodium p-styrene sulfonate is widely used as a dye dispersant and levelling agent. It can prevent the condensation and precipitation of dyes in solution, improve the solubility and stability of dyes, and make the printing and dyeing process more uniform and stable.

Leather industry: In the leather industry, sodium p-styrene sulfonate is mainly used for leather dyeing, coating and waterproof treatment. It can improve the dyeing effect and uniformity of the leather, enhance the adhesion and waterproof performance of the coating, and make the leather more beautiful and durable.

Cosmetics: In cosmetics, sodium p-styrene sulfonate is mainly used as an emulsifier, thickener and stabilizer. It can improve the stability, emulsification effect and viscosity of cosmetics, making the texture of products more delicate and easy to apply. In addition, sodium p-styrene sulfonate has certain moisturizing and antibacterial properties, which help improve the skin care effect and make cosmetics safer.

Building Materials Industry: Sodium p-styrene sulfonate is mainly used in waterproof coatings, tile adhesives and cement mixtures. It can improve the adhesive's adhesion and waterproof performance, improve the cement mixture's fluidity and hardening performance, and make the building materials more durable and excellent.

Ceramics and glass industry: In the ceramics and glass industry, sodium p-styrene sulfonate is used as an emulsifier and dispersant in preparing raw ceramic glazes and glass materials. It can improve the dispersion and stability of raw materials, reduce the melting temperature of glaze and glass in the production process, help reduce production energy consumption, and improve product quality.

Production Method of Sodium p-styrene sulfonate:

Oxidative coupling method

Preparation of raw materials: Prepare raw materials such as styrene, oxygen, catalyst and sodium hydroxide. Styrene should be refined to remove impurities from it.

Oxidation reaction: Under the action of the catalyst, styrene is oxidized with oxygen to generate corresponding free radicals. The catalyst can choose between transition metal oxides or organometallic compounds.

Coupling reaction: Under the appropriate reaction conditions, free radicals are coupled to produce polystyrene sulfonate. A homogeneous or heterogeneous catalytic system can be used for this step.

Alkalization: The reaction of polystyrene sulfonate with sodium hydroxide to obtain a sodium salt of sodium styrene sulfonate. In this step, the amount of sodium hydroxide should be moderate to ensure that high-purity sodium p-styrene sulfonate is obtained.

Separation and purification: Through filtration, washing and drying steps, the product sodium p-styrene sulfonate is separated from the reaction liquid, and further purification treatment is carried out to obtain a high-purity product.

Direct sulfonation method

Preparation of raw materials: Prepare raw materials such as styrene, sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. Styrene should be refined to remove impurities from it.

Sulfonation reaction: The sulfonation of styrene with sulfuric acid to produce p-styrene sulfonic acid. In this step, the amount of sulfuric acid should be moderate to ensure that high-purity p-styrene sulfonic acid is obtained.

Neutralization: The product of the sulfonation reaction is neutralized with sodium hydroxide to obtain sodium salt of sodium p-styrene sulfonate.
