High Purity Germanium Sulfide GeS2 Powder CAS 12025-34-2, 99.99%

Description of Germanium Sulfide (GeS2) Powder:

Germanium Sulfide is also known as Germanium Sulphide and Germanium Disulfide. GeS2 is the formula of germanium disulfide. It is unstable, easy to sublimate and oxidize, and dissociates in humid air or an inert atmosphere. Inorganic acids (including strong acids) and water are insoluble.

Germanium disulfide is 2.19g/cm3. Germanium Sulfide, which is composed mainly of Germanium Disulfide (GeS2) powders, has a melting temperature of 800 degrees Celsius. Germanium disulfide, like many other metal sulfides close to each other, is the subject of many researchers who are researching its potential for energy storage applications such as solid-state batteries.

The germanium disulfide crystal has an orthogonal structure. Each cell contains 24 molecules with the following dimensions: A = 11.66a; B = 22.34A; C = 6.86A. Accuracy 1/2%. The space group (C2V19) is FDD. Eight germanium atoms are arranged on a dual axis. All other atoms occupy an undefined location. These 12 parameters were determined. Each germanium is connected with four sulfur atomic trihedrons at an atomic separation of 2.19A. The angle of the two sulfur atoms is 103 deg.

Application of Germanium Sulfide GeS2 Powder:

Electronics and Semiconductor industry: Germanium sulfide is a group IV-VI compound semiconductor material with a band gap of 1.2 eV, similar to silicon (Si) and paraffin (C6H14). Due to its special electronic structure and physical properties, germanium sulfide has a wide range of applications in the electronics and semiconductor industry, such as the manufacture of transistors, optoelectronic devices, solar cells, and so on. In addition, GeS is often used to synthesize other materials with specific functions.

Photoelectric chemistry: In the field of photoelectric chemistry, germanium sulfide has good photoelectric properties and is used in the production of photoelectric chemical devices, such as photoelectrolysis of water to produce hydrogen light energy into chemical energy. These applications are conducive to the generation and use of clean energy.

Sensing and detection: Because of its high electron mobility and sensitive electrochemical properties, GeS is used to make chemical and biological sensors, as well as to detect trace metal ions. In addition, the fluorescent nature of GeS also makes it an effective candidate for fluorescent probes.

Optical field: Germanium sulfide has excellent optical properties and can be used to make optical devices, such as optical waveguides and optical filters. In addition, the fluorescent nature of GeS also makes it a potential application in the field of optics.

Solar thermal power field: Because GeS has a high thermoelectric potential (α-GeS has a thermoelectric potential of 25 mV/K at room temperature), it is used to make thermoelectric power generation components for use in the field of solar thermal power generation.

Catalyst field: Germanium sulfide can be used as a catalyst precursor. Similar to other elemental sulfides, it can provide an active center in the catalytic reaction to improve the reaction rate.

Electrochromic materials: Electrochromic refers to the reversible color change of materials under the action of an applied electric field. Germanium sulfide is an effective electrochromic material that can be used to make smart Windows, displays, etc.

Field-effect transistor (FET): FET is a type of transistor whose working principle depends on changes in the electrical conductivity of the material. Germanium sulfide is used as a semiconductor material for FET because of its good semiconductor properties.

Medical field: Because germanium sulfide has good biocompatibility and biological activity, it has certain application value in the medical field, such as drug carrier, biomarker, cancer treatment, and so on.

Production Method of Germanium Sulfide GeS2 Powder:

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) :

Chemical deposition by vapor is a typical method to prepare germanium sulfur powder. In the CVD process, compounds containing germanium, sulfur, and hydrogen (such as GeH4, Ge(SH)4, etc.) are used as reactants to generate germanium sulfide powder by heating or discharging. The specific steps are as follows:(1) The germanane (GeH4) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are respectively used as raw materials, and the two gases are mixed in the reactor at a certain temperature and pressure.

(2) By controlling the temperature and pressure, the above-mixed gas can undergo a CVD reaction to generate germanium sulfide powder.

(3) Collect the generated germanium sulfide powder and wash, dry, and do other treatments to obtain high-purity germanium sulfide powder.

The advantages of this method are that the reaction conditions are mild, easy to control, and high-purity germanium sulfide powder can be obtained. However, the disadvantage of this method is that the required equipment is more expensive and requires a large amount of hydrogen as a reducing agent. As a result, production costs are higher.

Liquid phase chemical method:

The liquid phase chemical method is a relatively simple method to prepare germanium sulfide powder. Using soluble germanium salt (such as GeO2, etc.) and hydrogen sulfide as raw materials, the powder was prepared by hydrolysis, precipitation, and drying. The specific steps are as follows:

(1) Soluble germanium salt and hydrogen sulfide are dissolved in water to generate a compound solution of germanium and sulfur.

(2) Add alkaline substances (such as NaOH, etc.) to the above solution, adjust the pH value so that the germanium and sulfur compounds in the solution undergo hydrolysis reaction, and generate Ge(OH)4 sediment, which is insoluble in water.

(3) Filter and wash the precipitate to obtain a wet product containing Ge(OH)4.

(4) The wet product containing Ge(OH)4 was roasted at high temperature, and the moisture in it was removed to obtain germanium sulfide powder.

The benefits of this method are its simplicity of operation and cost-effectiveness. However, the disadvantage of this method is that the product quality is not stable enough, and sometimes sintering agglomeration occurs. In addition, the production cycle of the liquid phase chemical method is longer, requiring multiple washing and drying operations.

Storage Conditions of Germanium Sulfide GeS2 Powder:
Germanium Sulfide GeS2 is affected by damp reunion, which will have an adverse effect on the powder's dispersion and use. Therefore, it should be packed in vacuum and kept in a dry and cool room. GeS2 powder must also not be exposed to stress.
